Recent advances in battery technology have led to the commercialisation of several entirely new classes of battery, including rechargeable nickel-metal hydride and secondary (or rechargeable) lithium cells and disposable zinc-air designs. Parallel developments in the control of battery charger technology has allowed the commercialisation of rechargeable alkaline and lithium-ion batteries, and is improving the marketability of existing battery systems such as nickel-cadmium and lead-acid. This in turn has allowed the commercialisation of portable products — such as laptop computers and cordless hand tools — that would be impossible without improved battery chargers. And as this synergy continues to develop, there are areas where the advanced battery industry could experience the explosive growth usually associated with emerging industries.
