Minimising the environmental impact of manufacturing is becoming central to the policies of most companies, due to increasing legislation and the need to be seen as 'green'. One key issue is energy consumption. By making sure each component is as energy efficient as possible and has been combined with the right drive technology to match the specific application, firms aim to achieve the greatest economic benefit as well as lowering their environmental impact. The cost of investing in electrical drives is minor when compared to the overall investment in a system or plant. But what really impacts on the running costs of a business over time is the energy consumption of the selected drive technology. In many industries, such as automotive, food and beverage and airport and general transport logistics, a financial estimate designed to help assess direct and indirect costs, called Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is becoming increasingly important, with energy efficiency the focal point of an integrated approach. With this in mind, Nord Gear has developed energy-saving inverters with a magnetisation adjustment option that allows more efficient operation of AS motors by optimising the motor current.
