Electric vehicles, fuel-cell hybrids and more radical concepts of air and solar-powered vehicles are finally grabbing the imagination of politicians. But funding is tight and the pace of development is in danger of falling behind the UK's ambitious carbon-reduction targets. What is needed is a stepping-stone technology something to help reduce carbon footprint while zero-emissions vehicles mature enough to become a viable alternative. A consortium led by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) believes the answer lies in improving the traditional engine concept.
