Computed tomography (CT) scans could be faster and expose patients to less radiation with new image reconstruction techniques inspired by the JPEG format.rnIn computing, JPEG uses compression algorithms to reduce the size of images so they can be later restored without visual losses. Such compression techniques work by representing images with fewer numbers than the amount of pixels in the original image.rnMarta Betcke, a computer science researcher at UCL, is leading an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council-sponsored project that will rely on a similar mathematical idea called 'com-pressive sampling' for a range of imaging applications. 'Instead of the usual way of acquiring an image and then compressing it like with JPEG, we will acquire an image in the compressed format,' she said.
