摘要

Thanks for the article entitled 'German lessons don't sink in' (The Engineer Online, 26 October); although the state of UK industry is not exclusively because of the lack of investment or engineer-centric focus by politicians, it goes deeper than that. Furthermore, the success of a business does not rest solely on the shoulders of engineers - the attitudes and abilities of administrators, salesmen and so on, obviously impact on businesses. A few years ago I hosted a group of German 15-year-old students who visited the local comprehensive and joined in with the lessons. They all expressed shock at how much time the UK students were given to finish tasks in class and, furthermore, that some did not even finish their tasks.
