Scientists have created an electronic component based on a single organic molecule by using spin and molecular processes. At one nanometre in diameter, the device represents a breakthrough and compares with carbon nanotube-based transistors. Researchers in Germany, France and Japan demonstrated that hydrogen phthalocyanin exhibits a strong magneto-resistance effect when it is trapped between electrodes.
