UK engineers are working on new selective laser melting (SLM) techniques that could allow the manufacture of complex parts for the aerospace and car industries. By experimenting with various blends of relatively cheap, coarse powders, the team at Exeter University was able to create extremely hard metal matrix composites with underlying reinforcing microstructures.
