Technology that could provide more cost-effective noise barriers around loud transport links and machinery has received a parliamentary award. The sound attenuation system, developed by researchers from Loughborough University, uses rows of cylindrical poles of an artificial 'metamaterial' to reflect certain frequency sound waves. This development, which requires less material to build noise barriers than solid designs, won researcher Dr Daniel Elford the bronze prize at March's SET for Britain competition run by the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee.
