Researchers have taken a major step towards an all-fibre optical communications network that bypasses the need for traditional electronic conversions.A team from Southampton and Perm State universities has created a doped semiconductor junction in a microstructured optical fibre, enabling photodetection at high bandwidth. 'This junction has a far higher performance than any electronic device ever integrated into a fibre before,' said Perm State's Prof John Badding.
