In response to the article 'Railroaded' (The Engineer Online, 11 January), HS2 remains somewhat off track. Many issues have been masked by the proposed high-speed railway that is, sadly, based upon steel railway rails and steel wheels and uses similar technology to that introduced in Japan during 1966. The East Coast Main line was electrified in the late 1980s, and electric trains (1C225) designed to operate at 140mph were introduced. But they have never been used, in service, to operate above 125mph - the running speed of the old diesel trains that they were supposed to replace.
