National Grid has awarded Mabey Bridge the contract to build the supporting towers for the first six T-pylons that are to be trialled in Nottinghamshire. After two initial kinds of prototype were designed and built in Denmark and tested in Sweden, the Mabey Bridge contract is the first indication that British engineering will benefit from the project to introduce an alternative to the traditional lattice-style pylon. A batteryless pacemaker powered by energy from the heart and based on automatic wristwatch technology has been unveiled. The technology, developed by researchers led by Prof Rolf Vogel from the University of Bern, harvests energy from the motion of the heart using the principles used to power self-winding watches. This means it could remove the need for operations to replace pacemaker batteries, said researcher and PhD student Adrian Zurbuchen.
