Northern Ireland manufacturer PrimePac has worked with ABB to breathe new life into an ageing plastic-bottle moulding machine. The 23-year-old piece of equipment uses a hydraulic motor to run an extruder on a blow moulder. However, after running 24 hours a day for five days a week, its motor was operating inefficiently. Whereas previously it took 10 seconds to create a bottle, in recent years this had extended to 12 seconds. The extruder was also creating long tails of excess plastic that needed to be trimmed and recycled in a very energy intensive process.
