I was going to dedicate this column to the ongoing Brexit debacle, and in particular the remarkable and unprecedented breakdown in the relationship between manufacturing and government. Never, in two decades of reporting on UK manufacturing and engineering, have I seen so many in the business community regard the government with such open exasperation and contempt. Here's hoping that by the time this issue lands, industry will have more, not less, cause to be optimistic about the political and economic backdrop against which it operates.
