DECC finalised rules for awarding 400 megawatts worth of biomass electricity subsidies in England and Wales on 31 July. Proposals limiting Renewables Obligation (RO) support for biomass plants to the first 400MW of installed capacity were issued for consultation by DECC in May (ENDS Report 460, p2o). The subsidy limit applies to biomass installations above 50 kilowatts that generate electricity only. More efficient combined heat and power (CHP) biomass plants are exempt because the government wants to encourage these.
