EA failing to close illegal waste sites due to resource cuts

The Environment Agency (EA) is failing to shut down high-risk illegal waste sites quickly enough in England, according to the regulator's own figures. The EA's corporate scorecard, published on 31 October, shows that there were 274 high-risk illegal waste sites from April to June 2017.1 This is 28 more sites than the EA's target for the first quarter of the 2017/18 financial year. In addition, there were already 51 more illegal sites in the first quarter of 2017/18 than the 223 target for the end of the year.
