Eating Spring Rice: The Cultural Politics of AIDS in Southwest China

China has the second fastest growing AIDS epidemic in Asia, behind India. Yunnan province, ground zero of China's AIDS epidemic, where HIV-infected heroin users were first identified in the late 1980s, is the setting of this book. In this first major ethnographic study of HIV/AIDS in China, Sandra Hyde draws on over a decade of ethnographic research to chronicle the rise of the HIV epidemic, from prior to the Chinese government's acknowledgement of AIDS in China to 2006. While this is largely an analysis of the epidemic as it emerged, Hyde concludes with current data and an epilogue, "What is to be done?"
