China's Rise and the Balance of Influence in Asia

The dramatic growth of China's economy over the past three decades has been paralleled by an equally dramatic growth of studies speculating on the implications for the international system of what has become known as the "rise of China." Some studies are inclined to accept assertions by Beijing that it seeks only a peaceful environment in which to develop its economy. The same studies are sanguine about China's possible integration into the existing global system. Other works are more sceptical about such possibilities, pointing to the experience of history when rising powers have often challenged, rather than accepted, the prevailing norms of the international system.
