The book Foreign Firms, Investment, and Environmental Regulation in the People's Republic of China by Phillip Stalley makes a critical contribution to our understanding of the impact of foreign firms on China's environmental regulation. Industrial pollution is a severe problem in China today, causing serious health and environmental concerns. According to estimates, industrial pollution accounts for 4 to 5 per cent of the nation's -annual GDP in terms of clean-up costs, health care costs and lost wages. Hence, attention to this problem is essential for government and business. Stalley's book stays on a more generic level by engaging in the wider debate about the implications of foreign capital (or "mobile capital" as Stalley names it) for environmental regulation.
