Die casting processes evolve in conjunction with breakthroughs in other major technologies. A significant technology that has been under development for the past 17 years is the production of non-dendritic alloys, which are suitable for processing in the semi-solid condition. Parallel with the development of these revolutionary alloys has been the integration of higher levels of sophisticated computer control, which provide for adaptive, servo-control of the die casting process. Together, these technological advances have been combined to create a casting process known as semi-solid molding (SSM).
