Signs of an encouraging rise in demand for canned foods both in North America and Europe in the final quarter of 2008 provided vindication for those who predicted that the metal packaging industry would be likely to benefit during the economic slowdown. rnIn the US, while overall fourth-quarter shipments for food cans were up 6.9 percent some food sectors showed a rise of more than 12 percent (see news on page 6). rnCrown Holdings was uncharacteristically thrilled in its results for 2008, which included confirmation that its global food can volumes were up by more than 2 percent in the final quarter, along with strong gains in beverage cans in both North America and Europe.
