Canmakers were in an upbeat mood last month as they announced their annual financial results. rnJohn Conway, chief executive of world industry lead- er Crown Holdings, said that 2008 had been one of the best years for the company, when things came together "in quite a remarkable way", while he expects the "tremendous momentum" to carry on. rnThere are signs that as the world's economies contract with demand for fast moving consumer goods slowing, cash-strapped families are switching to canned foods. It is still too early to start congratulating ourselves, but when Crown, the world leader in food cans, reports its global volumes rising by 2 percent, and industry data shows a lift in US food can shipments for the whole of 2008, I think it's very encouraging.
