Downturn boosts food can demand

A further sign that the economic downturn could be benefiting the canmaking industry is revealed in US food can volumes for the final quarter of 2008, which were rn6.9 percent up on the same period a year earlier. rnShipments of cans to food producers in the three months to the end of December reached 7.5 billion, according to the latest figures from the US-based Can Manufacturers Institute. The fourth quarter lift helped the year-end food can total to reach 29.6bn, 1.3 percent up on 2007, and the highest since 2004.
