Lightweight ing gathers pace

Cans made with tinplate as thin as 100 microns are being tested by a customer in the fish industry, while a multinational food company is discussing the prospect of using three-piece cans with gauges approaching that figure. Both developments are the culmination of a programme that was initiated three years ago by Rasselstein, which wanted to demonstrate to customers and consumers that there was further potential for cutting the weight of steel packaging. In collaboration with canmaking machinery manufacturer Soudronic and coating and decorating specialist KBA-Met-alprint, the German steelmaker has been helping with the development of canmaking and coating systems that make the goal possible.
