A star is born

S.A. Damm was founded by August Kuentzmann Damm, a refugee of the Franco-Prussian war. Damm settled with his wife Melanie in Barcelona after fleeing the Alsace region of France in 1872. Lured by the climate, culture, and quality of life that Barcelona had to offer, Damm founded a brewery in 1876, continuing the beer making work he had started in Alsace. The first beer produced by Damm was called Strasburger, which used the star symbol on its packaging that has become integral to the company's modern day flagship brand, Estrella Damm (Estrella means star in both Spanish and Catalan). An important step in the company's production history was completed in 1905, when Damm opened a brewery on Carrer del Rossello, Barcelona, and named it Bohemia as a tribute to the flourishing brewing industry of central Europe. The star on Damm's beer packaging then made its first appearance in a brand name in 1921, when Estrella Dorada (Golden Star) was launched.
