New Zealand dairy giant Fonterra has warned a number of its customers that a batch of its whey protein could be contaminated with a substance that causes botulism. The company said the protein was contaminated with clostrid-ium bacteria when a product was reprocessed using a disused production line that had not been cleaned. Eight companies in China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, and Fonterra's home market of New Zealand are reported to be impacted by the contamination, including Danone, Chinese food and beverage producer Wahaha, and Coca-Cola Greater China.
