Volumes of food and general line cans shipped by the US canmak-ing industry showed encouraging growth in the third quarter. For the three months to the end of September 9.56 billion were sent to customers, a rise of 3.6 percent compared with the same period in 2012. Most of the increase was provided by an almost 100 million unit jump in shipments to what the Can Manufacturers Institute calls Other Foods and includes baby food, juices, meat & poultry and seafood product. The sector jumped 7.9 percent to 1.35 billion units.
