Cans steady despite pressures

Despite all the uncertainties in the US regarding the outcome of the presidential election, the 'fiscal clifF and stubbornly high unemployment, the canmaking industry and its shipments to customers held up well. This reflects the continued strength of consumer demand as the economy continued to recover from the real estate meltdown experienced into 2009.In the final quarter of 2012, beverage can output rose by 1.4 percent, and was only modestly off for the year as detailed in Table 1. Shipments were particularly strong for beer cans, which rose by 4.0 percent in the quarter and 2.3 percent for the year, obviously rising at the expense of glass and helped by a proliferation of new formats such as slim, sleek, and shaped cans.
