It's a well-known fact that in the beverage can business, the bigger, the better. The more productive a D&I manufacturing line is, the lower are the unit costs. This means higher margins and profits. Building a big plant - and these days the biggest have capacities exceeding four billion cans a year - is the challenge for carmakers. It's enough to bring a line with capacity for 700 million cans a year up to speed - a year from equipment installation is a fair target - but for a 'monster' line, getting everything to sing in tune is a monumental task.
