Sales at US-based canmaker Silgan rose in the second quarter thanks to a surge in seasonal orders, with net sales over the three months of US$1.09 billion, a 3.2 per cent increase on the same period last year. Silgan's metal container business posted sales of $575.6 million, up $50.7mon2018.This improvement followed an increase in can volumes of 6 per cent. Even so, net profit was down at $31 m from the $55.3m in the same three-month period of 2018. The Connecticut-based company has been counting the cost of closing two plants and pulling out of a staff pension scheme.
