Refurbishment Zeiss Legacy Puts German Regeneration in Focus

The regeneration of the Carl Zeiss optical engineering works in Jena establishes a precedent for post-reunification urban regeneration in the former East Germany. Masterplanned by DEGW, the scheme has raced from concept to completion in five years. The 140-year-old heart of the city, the Carl Zeiss Jena Hauptwerk (main plant), had to be partly torn out and rebuilt, incorporating the services and accommodation necessary to support economic growth and re-employment in the capitalised marketplace of Europe in the 1990s and beyond.
