Contrasting coloured brickwork used for a variety of details provides a strong sense of continuity in a housing scheme which rediscovers traditional forms and layouts. Wandering through the latest section of Clapton Park Estate on a warm, sunny July day, it is hard to imagine that this pleasant social housing scheme was completed in five distinct phases, such is the consistency of detailing and the good level of construction unifying the entire scheme. It is even harder to believe that the semi-rural idyll prevailing on the river side - with birds singing, children playing and weeping willows dipping their boughs gracefully into the slowly flowing water - is not a scene from the River Cam or even the nicer stretches of the Thames, but a section of the River Lea flowing through the UK's poorest borough - the London Borough of Hackney.
