Paperness offers a reflective account by the artist-author of the processes by which artworks investigate a particular material: paper string. Nimkulrat seeks to uncover and articulate knowledge hidden and embedded between artist and materials. Setting herself simultaneously in the dual roles of artist and researcher allows Nimkulrat to give voice to the intimate and implicit realm of tacit knowledge. The structure of Paperness follows that of many practice-based or practice-led theses. As a result, Nimkulrat offers a thorough and well-documented path through her research processes, findings, and analysis. There are extended discussions in Chapter Two about the difference between practice-led and practice-based research, which highlight developments within the field of practice-research and an ongoing negotiation for the role of creative practice within such research projects.
