Interview 4. Claude Delmas: Central Asian Ikats as a Source of Study and Inspiration in her Art Weavings

Claude Delmas dyes and weaves ikat cloth. She has advised others through lectures and workshops (and some work with communities in Nepal). She exhibits her pieces (Figure 1). While her original and main focus is on the Central Asian ikat weaving, she explores the possibilities of different ikat traditions and techniques. There are various examples around the world of artists and designers continuing to keep a heritage alive, as Claude is doing. But her work also illustrates the possibilities for further artistic creation, introducing other designs and themes into the work, giving it a contemporary importance but with respect for the original heritage. Exhibiting her work shows others how themes (and colours and designs) can be further explored.
