Effect of the Structure of Coaxial Cables on Their Electrical Properties

Bare annealed copper wire of 1.05 mm diameter, which is coated with one layer of tin, is used as the central conductor in this study. Tinned copper wire of the same diameter, fabricated by the braiding machine as the outer conductors or wrapped with aluminum-plastic-aluminum tape, is used as outer conductors. The braiding materials and constituents are varied to make different 75 Ω coaxial cables. From the experimental results, the shielded layer with single and double plies at frequency ranges from 300 to 2500 MHz, the tinned copper wire, and the overlap around the aluminum-plastic-aluminum tape at the inner shield yield the minimum attenuation. At frequency ranges from 200 to 1500 MHz, the leakage of the coaxial cable has the same tendency as the attenuation.
