At the time of Pakistan's independence in 1947, the textile industry was operational with a nominal six spinning mills of around 177,000 spindles and a cottage industry of some 5,000 weaving machines. The sector could only supply around 8% of domestic demand that came from a population of 76 million people. However, over the years, the textile industry in Pakistan has witnessed phenomenal growth and has undergone numerous changes both in philosophy and practise.
