Increased Production and Exports of Textile Machinery in 2003-04

There has been an appreciable Increase In the production of the Indian textile machinery industry In 2003-04 at Rs. 1339 crores, up from Rs, 1175 crore in 2002-03, on a lower capacity of Rs. 30SO crore compared to a capacity of Rs 380O crore in the previous year the utilization going up to 44 per cent from 31 per cent, The exports of the Industry also showed an Increase of 29 per cent from Rs 406 crore in 20O2-03 to Rs 525 crore in 2003-04 (estimated). Speaking at the 44th annual general meeting of the Textile Machinery Manufacturers' Association (India) in Mumbai on September 28, Mr Sanjay Jayavarthanavelu Chairman TMMA claimed that the textile engineering industry had the full quantitative and qualitative capacity to meet most of the needs of the Indian textile industry but the utilization was low because of the increased imports. He was glad to note some rise in the exports and the continued upward trend. He stressed the need for the upgradation of technology and urged the Government to set up a fund for the purpose - and suggested some measures to stimulate the growth of this industry.
