What The Indian Textile Industry Can Do To Face The Post-Quota Era

The much written and talked about post-MFA era in the global textile and clothing trade has come and become a reality with the ending of the quota regime on January 1,2005, The need for the Indian textile industry to re-orient itself to face the globalised competition has been stressed a lot by spokesmen of the industry as well as the Government, The issues involved and questions to be answered are that the industry, which had enjoyed a high degree of protection, had tended to look inwards and be complacent though in the past few years it has been preparing itself to face the challenges of the era that was coming and how it could gear and orient itself to compete in the post-quota export market and how the highly fragmented textile industry could achieve economies of scale to improve its efficiency and financial performance and modernize itself sufficiently to build up global competitiveness. There is also need for rationalization of the duty structure and to bring about parity between the cotton and synthetic sectors to enable the latter to realize its full potential. The debate has been going on about what would be the conducive policies and measures to achieve the desired objectives. Published here are the views on this subject by three experts in the field.
