The Survival 2005 conference, held at Bodington Hall, University of Leeds expanded on previous conferences and had three main themes. Firstly new concepts to improve comfort and survival performance, secondly to provide insights into recent developments in the understanding of comfort techniques, and finally consideration of the complete clothing system when evaluating desirable protection and comfort. This TechniTex conference was organised by the School of Design, University of Leeds which has considerable research expertise and facilities for carrying out fundamental and applied research into garment design and in the evaluation of performance clothing and comfort in wear. Dave Brook (University of Leeds) welcomed the delegates and chaired the conference. The first presentation was given by Anton Hutson (Tendring Pacific, Great Chesterford, Essex, UK) on the measurement of water vapour permeation of breathable films and membranes using the Lyssy L80-5000 technique. The mechanism of permeability was based upon moisture vapour arriving at the surfaces of a material where sorption occurred followed by diffusion across the films or membrane (according to Fick's Law) followed by desorption from the other side of the material.
