Resplendent Dress from South Eastern Europe: A History in Layers

The editors have brought together impressive contributors who have focused almost entirely on the Fowler collection of dress from South-Eastern Europe, placing their discussions and insights within both ethnographic and political contexts. With the history of this part of Europe unfortunately characterised by long periods of oppression and conflict, the impact of politics cannot be underestimated. Perhaps the most significant period for the Balkans was that of the Ottoman Empire. Beginning with the epic battle of Kosovo in 1389, it ended only in the 1920s. Its influence in the Balkans has been marked in terms of styles of dress and embroidery as well as in language, customs and social organisation.
