Broadband digital subscriber line: A full service network for the copper plant

Broadband digital subscriber line is a new approach to upgrading the existing network for broadband services. BDSL may offer a number of significant advantages over the hybrid fiber/coax video strategy now favored. The new BDSL strategy uses a 25 Mb/s version of asymmetrical digital subscriber line for transmission of video and data signals over the copper distribution plant. A fiber-to-the-serving area architecture is used to deliver broadband signals over fiber to remote nodes, with each node serving 100 or more homes. BDSL is used for transmission to each subscriber over the last 3 kilofeet of copper.
