Telefonos de Mexico, Telmex, has been the dominant force in the Mexican stock market for more than five years, largely on the basis of its telecommunications monopoly and its guaranteed growth rate. But in January 1997, when long-distance service will be opened to competitors, Telmex will find itself looking over its shoulder as hungry entrepreneurs fight for a piece of the action. The change in the long-distance landscape is part of the terms of an agreement worked out when Telmex was privatized in 1989.
