摘要

Major wireless carriers aren't interested in offering adult content, no matter the revenue opportunities, they told our affiliate Communications Daily. Carriers were responding in part to an article in USA Today suggesting recent industry moves to adopt a ratings system and parental control software to their handsets may be intended to open the door to offering adult content. All major carriers have said they won't offer adult content on their “walled garden” networks, and each has a method that it claims keeps adult content from becoming widely available over the WAP network (the stripped-down HTML used for web access over mobile phones). Cingular, whose launch of its MediaNet 3.0 software made it the first major wireless carrier to comply with part of the new CTIA guidelines on adult content, put doubt about their plans to rest: “We do not offer, nor do we have plans to offer, obscene or pornographic material,” a spokesman told us. The company has simply introduced a parental-control feature as part of its Internet access service, he said, “which we think is a positive thing.”
