Outgoing FCC Comr. Kathleen Abernathy said telecom is "far more competitive and deregulated” than ever before. Speaking Fri. at the Institute on Telecom Policy & Regulation of the Practising Law Institute, she said the focus on consumer welfare continues. Abernathy said that as a staunch advocate of a do-not-call list and giving parents programming information, she would gladly inform those who long for the ways of the past that the FCC has no fear of stepping in when there's a true need. She said the FCC will shift toward enforcement and "consumer empowerment" in the markets of "telecom yet to come."
