NO BPL INTERFERENCE TO DSL PROVEN, SAY INDUSTRY OFFICIALS

BellSouth concerns about broadband over power line (BPL) interference with DSL operations isn’t based on empirical data, BPL officials said. BellSouth CTO Bill Smith recently called on the IEEE to back measures to prevent BPL interference. “Our view is that BPL products and DSL products are certified by the FCC, so it’s a regulatory issue and it’s not a standards issue,” said John Boot, vice chmn. of the IEEE group working on standards for BPL coexistence. IEEE BPL standards groups aren’t tackling DSL interference, though presentations on the topic were made to his group and to one on electromagnetic compatibility, Boot said. The IEEE BPL coexistence standard seeks to ensure coexistence among BPL technologies, not between BPL and other technologies, he said.
