RECHARGEABLE BATTERY COLLECTION EFFORTS PAYING OFF, RECYCLER SAYS

Collection of used rechargeable batteries reached 2.4 million lbs. in N. America in the first half of 2006, up 6.4% from the 2005 period, the nonprofit Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corp. said Thurs. It attributed the gains for its Call2Recycle program largely to the expansion of collection sites through participating retailers, businesses, communities and public agencies. Since Jan., RBRC saw a 10% percent increase in participation, adding 4,466 new collection sites to the previous 30,000, it said. The list of products powered by rechargeable batteries continues to grow, and includes numerous MP3 players, laptop PCs, PDAs, pagers, cordless and cellular phones as well as digital cameras, cordless power tools, camcorders, handheld mini-vacuums and remote-controlled toys.
