Verizon Wireless will prorate its early termination fees (ETFs) starting this fall, according to CEO Denny Strigl. In remarks prepared for delivery at the Yankee Group 2006 N. American Wireless Leadership Summit in N.Y. late Wed., Strigl says “we believe dissatisfaction with flat early termination fees is tarnishing the entire industry.” The move makes Verizon Wireless the first major carrier to drop the flat ETF from subscriber contracts. ETFs have been as contentious as they are unsavory: According to the U.S. Public Interest Research Group, early termination fees in the U.S. average $170, with the high-end around $240.
