FCC NUMBER REPORT SHOWS POPULARITY OF NUMBER PORTABILITY

Wireless customers have moved more than 20 million telephone numbers to new carriers since portability began Nov. 24, 2003, with wireline customers moving 22 million numbers, according to the FCC's latest report on number usage. The report, based on number use as of June 30, 2005, also shows 1000s-block pooling has saved nearly 200 million numbers. Overall, number usage as of June 30 was 43%, up slightly from 42.2% six months earlier. Carriers have 1.3 billion numbers, 565 million of them assigned to customers, nearly 659 million available for assignment and about 90 million used for other purposes such as administration.
