GROUPS APPLAUD SENATE BROADBAND BILLS

Consumers Union, Free Press and Internet industry players lauded 2 measures intended to help bring affordable broadband to all Americans by freeing unused spectrum in broadcast frequencies for use by wireless broadband and other services. Sen. George Allen (R-Va.) introduced the Wireless Innovation Act, and Commerce Committee Chmn. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) introduced the American Broadband for Communities Act. The bills direct the FCC to move swiftly to free this so-called 搘hite space?for reuse. Microsoft also applauded the move. Managing Dir.-Federal Govt. Affairs Jack Krumholtz said the bills represent 揳 great step forward for innovation and for delivering broadband to rural parts of the country,?he said.
