RECOMMENDATION COMING ON USE OF SENSORS TO MONITOR OUTSIDE PLANT

An ITU-T study group agreed last week to begin work on a monitoring-system recommendation for the safety of telecom outside plant facilities, using wireless sensor networks. The recommendation will describe typical disasters and emergency management for outside plant facilities, said a note from the sub-group on optical access and transport network technologies and facilities. It also will describe an overview of wireless sensor networks for the application and design considerations, according to the note, which was sent to other ITU participants. A revised draft text will be circulated in March for initial consideration in September.
