LAWMAKER ASKS FCC TO PREVENT FILTERING OF TEXT MESSAGES BY CONTENT

The FCC should protect text messaging from discriminatory treatment, Rep. Pete DeFazio, D-Ore., said in a letter to FCC Chairman Kevin Martin Monday signed by 14 House members. It asks the commission to grant a petition by Public Knowledge and others to declare that text messaging is a Title II service protected from discrimination by carriers. The petition grew out of a complaint last year that Verizon Wireless refused an abortion rights group access to its text messaging service. 揥hile they reversed course due to public pressure, Verizon, and any other carrier still have the right to block any group, regardless of its political ideology, from sending text messages,?the letter said.
